Submissions are now open for IBIS HOUSE! Is Ibis House the world’s first literararararararararararararararary journal? We don’t really know ... yet. But we do know what we want to publish and how we want to publish it. Ibis House pays contributors and offers readers the opportunity to 'tip' authors after reading their work.
MARGINALISED VOICES TO THE FRONT
We wish to amplify the voices of those most underrepresented. We strongly encourage trans people, people of colour, non-binary people, women, people with a disability, queer people, First Nations People, sex workers, survivors, working class people, and anyone who finds themselves on the margins of the supremely white, cis, heteronormative, capitalist, colonial, ableist, patriarchal hellscape in which we live to submit work.
WHAT CAN I SUBMIT?
- Columns (pitch us an idea if you’d like to contribute a regular column)
- Sound recordings
- Image macros
- Digital-based texts
- Literarararararary Experiments
- *Hybrid* forms
In a nutshell (are we still putting things in nutshells?), we’re interested in all forms of literarararararararararararararararature (whatever that means).
In terms of spirit, we’re interested in publishing writing that quietly(/loudly) shatters universes(/hellscapes), robs us of breath (also known as 'breath burglars'), sets hearts chortling, devastates and destroys and rebuilds, stuff that’s weird but not experimental, stuff that’s experimental but not avant garde. Writing against the times. Work from the upside down. Writing that comes straight from the heart to land in between.
Submit poetry, micro fictions/nonfictions, videos, essays, memoir, experiments; you name it, we're interested in housing it.
HOW DO I SUBMIT?
Submissions must be submitted via Submittable. It is free to submit.
We welcome submissions from outside Australia. If you live outside of Australia, we will use PayPal to pay you.
We don’t accept submissions via email.
Simultaneous submissions are a-okay with us (we’re not monsters) so long as you let us know as soon as your piece is accepted elsewhere.
If you're submitting poetry, please include no more than 5 poems.
If submitting prose, please ensure it is formatted in a readable font.
We’ll endeavour to respond to your submission within three weeks. If you haven’t heard from us by then please feel free to drop us a line at firstname.lastname@example.org
Anyone who submits work to Ibis House and Subbed In will be subscribed to our emailing list. We assume you are submitting because you're interested in our work and the goings-on of Subbed In and Ibis House. You can expect emails from us about one to four times per month and it’s super easy to unsubscribe.
As we are a small operation, we currently don’t have the resources to offer personalised feedback on submissions.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT IF I’M PUBLISHED?
Subbed In pays you and readers are able to 'tip' you for your work by making a donation of their choice. Your piece will appear online at Ibis House and will be promoted via Subbed In’s channels. You can also expect an artwork to accompany your piece.
THAT’S NICE, BUT WHAT’S THE PAY RATE, ETC?
Ibis House pays contributors $60 per piece. Further to this, we offer readers the opportunity to donate to authors after reading their piece. This is based on a 80/20 split model (80% to the author, 20% to Subbed In/Ibis House). The 20% goes straight back into supporting future publishing projects and events by Subbed In.
Thank you for considering Subbed In and Ibis House 💕
